Latin America November imports of Chinese steel up 83%
Latin America imported 729,865 mt of finished steel from China in November, up 83% from the year-ago month's 399,293 mt, the Latin American Steel Association reported Tuesday.
January-November period, shipments of finished steel products from China into Latin America totaled 7.44 million mt, up 56% on the year-ago period's 4.77 million mt, the association, known as Alacero, said in a statement. This volume maintains the region as the second- largest destination for Chinese exports, behind only South Korea, which imported 11.5 million mt.
Brazil received 1.8 million mt, or 24% of the Latin American total; Chile took in 1.1 million mt (15%) and Central America, the third-largest destination within the region, imported 1 million mt (14%).
The imports were mainly flat products, which accounted for 4.9 million mt, or 66% of the total. Sheet and coil of alloyed steel represented 38% of the flats total (1.9 million mt), followed by hot-dip galvanized (20%, 1 million mt) and cold-rolled coil (20%, 967,181 mt). Long products totaled 2 million mt, of which 1.2 million mt were wire rod.
